The principle is that by putting a canister of liquid inside the bird, the steam created keeps the meat moist throughout the cooking process whilst still allowing the skin to crisp on the outside whilst also allowing the liquid from the can to also flavour the meat.

1 Vote(s)

Hired as actors for a TV series, Michael Nesmith, Peter Tork, Micky Dolenz and Davy Jones went on to feature in one of the most successful American pop bands of the 1960s. The four were chosen for their youth, good looks and ability to play themselves. Being able to play musical instruments was not so important. The idea was not to create a band, but to create a TV show about a band. And to make sure things didn’t get out of control, the original contract for the show banned the four Monkees from playing instruments on any of their recordings. All they had to do was say their lines, clown around and sing. The trouble started when the music began to outperform the TV show.

1 Vote(s)

Apparently, Will Smith aspires to be the biggest male lead in Hollywood, and I am Legend is essentially a Will Smith star vehicle. It’s a very effective star vehicle, too - he curbs his natural cockiness and portrays ‘the last man on earth’ and his steady mental disintegration with consummate skill. Unusually for Hollywood, it has a notably dark ending, and Smith’s several anti-religion rants (coupled with a dose of scientific hubris - he’s clearly used to finding solutions, and quickly) makes the film almost nihilistic. Like Beckett’s Waiting for Godot, I am Legend makes a point of going nowhere, fast.

1 Vote(s)

There's an interesting piece on the Fairfax news websites today about 'life modelling'. I thought it was a little weak of the journalist who wrote the piece to simply sit in on the art class rather than do a stint as a model- I mentioned once while relating another story that I once took up a one-off job as a life model in Brisbane, and it's a tough job.I think the author is a little behind the times when she says it's a job that 'generates plenty of innuendo' and expresses surprise that it's not 'sexy'. First of all, what kind of innuendo can you derive from sitting around naked in front of a bunch of strangers with easels and art supplies Most people would think that's pretty daunting, I reckon. What was surprising for me was not how 'unsexy' it all was, but how damn difficult it is to hold a pose for half an hour, even when it's a really easy one.

1 Vote(s)

I've spent a fair bit of time looking at a sample of the Big Brother video auditions this evening, and for the most part I hate them all. But that's only because very few of them manage to build an interesting repartee with their audience through their home cameras, and they're all pretty much the most appalling spellers I've ever seen (common mistakes The word "independent" - too many horrific bastardisations to contemplate), but I'm quietly confident that the new angle that BB is aiming for next year will pay dividends. A real shot in the arm, you might say. Please don't make a fool of me, stoners and teenage girls voting for audition tapes on the internet.

1 Vote(s)

The battle between screw cap and cork is pretty much over in Australia, with the screw cap emerging a decisive winner, even some French wine companies have turned to this closure, though at the top end of the market there is still some resistance. However, not everyone shares our belief in screw cap technology. It came as a surprise when I opened this bottle of Austrian gruner veltliner, to discover that what appeared to be a screw cap, was in fact a protective cover for a glass stopper lurking underneath.

1 Vote(s)

Let's say that you're a good local band, who plays once a month, at a medium sized venue, something like the Rob Roy used to be. You get a good crowd, which in Melbourne is between 100 and 200 people, unless you're famous. Let's also say that the venue doesn't take any money from the door price, though many do. Tickets are $10 and there are three bands. The headline band would get about $4 from that, with the remaining $6 split between supports. So, assuming it's a good gig and 200 people turn up, that's $800.Not a lot, sure, but if it's a four piece band that means taking home $200 each, so that's not so bad is it (I hope you're not stupid enough to be in a 6 piece) Well...

1 Vote(s)

Luke and I spent Monday hanging out in Sydney and meeting with Logan of Kotaku Australia. Luke and I ambled around town, hitting up a couple of very cool bookstores and an arcade before going our separate ways. At one point we walked into a tea shop and I spotted this couple cuddling in the corner over a matching set of DSes. I think it's the first public display of gaming affection I've ever seen.

1 Vote(s)

Daria is enduring high school until she can get away to further studies outside her conformist suburban community. She’s not into fashion enough to be either goth or emo, but she’s far more in sympathy with those kids than with the princess crowd of cheerleaders and ruthless fashionistas. She has a wide range of pithy putdowns for those sort of pretensions, although the show makes sure that Daria doesn’t have all the answers herself, and is occasionally embarrassed by her own assumptions. Well balanced show in my opinion.

1 Vote(s)

A recent article by the The Age's food writer John Lethlean caught my eye. It seems he had been watching Heston Blumenthal's Search For Perfection with the same interest that I wrote about on this blog, but John took things a step further by actually attempting one of Heston's techniques for roasting a chicken, something that involved, amongst one of many procedures, roasting the bird at 60c for 4.5 hours.

1 Vote(s)

Many of you will be familiar with my WWTTD Theory. The theory is that if one can successfully answer the question ‘What Would Tintin Do” one will invariably find one’s self on the road to Good Times.
Now that the dust has settled on In Rainbows I realize that one of the things that I really love about the record is the fact that Nude FINALLY made it onto a Radiohead album. The song has been kicking around since the OK Computer days and has been, along with Big Boots and Lift, the most beloved “lost” Radiohead song. The song has been known by a variety of names amongst the Radiohead community; for a long time it was Big Ideas or Big Ideas (Don’t Get Any), sometimes Nude and even occasionally that ridiculous title Thom mentioned in Meeting People is Easy. In fact, the song was featured in its entirety at the end of that film as Radiohead wrapped up the crippling OK Computer tour in New York City.

1 Vote(s)

Last week, on the way back from the Justin Timberlake show (top three all time shows ever), I had some stuff in the car I was going to put in the Vinnies bin, so decided to swing by on the way back.It was a little after midnight on Tuesday, technically Wednesday morning, when I pulled in to the side of the Vinnie’s store in Bondi where the donation bins are.As I parked, I noticed a guy in a hoodie going through the piles of clothes left by the bins. It’s nothing really out of the ordinary for Bondi, though I sized him up, noticed that he was wearing two t-shirts under his hoodie, and figured that he wasn’t too scary so I got out of the car and started to unload my bags of stuff into the bins.

1 Vote(s)
