It’s no longer even Paris Hilton the celebrity, it’s Perez Hilton the celebrity. It’s no longer even Steve Jobs the celebrity, it’s Fake Steve Jobs the celebrity. Indeed, we have rocketed so far outside the universe that we don’t even know what celebrity is, was, or could be.Celebrity has long ago swallowed itself and we need to redefine what we mean by the term every time we use it. Writer and star Eddie Perfect's last success was Keating The Musical, based on former Australian Prime Minister Paul Keating. It's hard to imagine shoe-horning the topic of macro-economics and fiscal management into several hours of cabaret music but somehow they pulled it off.
John Howard's morning walk has become one of the most loaded images in Australian politics. Its precise meaning is unfixed and mutable. It has, at various times, meant very different things. The morning walk was once a sign of Howard's bland-and-boring ordinariness. Later, in the heady post-9/11 days, when national security was the little man's trump card and wooing voters meant talking tough, the walk was about strength, fitness and ability. The message was loud as clear. Only Howard could talk the talk. Only Howard could walk the walk.Beazley, of course, never walked anywhere.

2 Vote(s)

Maybe you heard about the arrest of Jose Luis Calva, who is described as an “aspiring horror novelist.” Police found a draft of his manuscript Cannibalistic Instincts, along with pieces of his girlfriend stashed in various places around his apartment, including in the frypan. I know, I know, I had the same reaction: it’s pretty unfair to call him “aspiring.” It sounds like that draft was finished. And not just finished, but comprehensively researched. Sure, some people say you’re not a novelist until you’re published, but in this day of print-on-demand and internet vanity presses, is that really a meaningful distinction I say, if the guy went to all the trouble of crafting a story arc, putting words on the page day after day, and boiling his girlfriend’s flesh, he’s a novelist. Give him that.

2 Vote(s)
