The Howard morning walk

John Howard's morning walk has become one of the most loaded images in Australian politics.

Its precise meaning is unfixed and mutable. It has, at various times, meant very different things. The morning walk was once a sign of Howard's bland-and-boring ordinariness. Later, in the heady post-9/11 days, when national security was the little man's trump card and wooing voters meant talking tough, the walk was about strength, fitness and ability. The message was loud as clear. Only Howard could talk the talk. Only Howard could walk the walk.

Beazley, of course, never walked anywhere.
