Kelly Clarkson’s Since You’ve Been Gone is really very good. Some of you out there might have just felt a pang in your heart as you read that, but it’s true.
In fact, if you just listened to the music and managed to mute the vocals, you might find yourself wondering ‘Is this the latest song of some indie favourite? Death Cab For Cutie? Snow Patrol? Surely some obscure Scandinavian group?’ No, fools! It’s the latest song from the American Idol winner!
The songs only weak spot is at the end of the second chorus where Kelly sings “You had your chance, you blew it…” where it sounds like the hook from a mediocre 80’s rock ballad, but the rest? Excellent. Don’t hate me because I speak the truth, dudes.
Ashlee Simpson is an absolute cockface at times, to be sure - but am I the only one who has watched the La La video clip and thought “Hey, she actually looks sort of hot!”? Yes? Nevermind. It would appear I’m the only person who can look past her freakish displays of anger in the video and all the rage-filled spazza-dancing, not to mention her infamous gene pool and… Okay, can I start again? I think I’ve changed my angle.
Ashlee Simpson’s Pieces Of Me is ALSO very good! Sure, daft Ashlee was stupid enough to get caught miming (but she sucks live, so it was probably for the best) and she was painful in 7th Heaven (which is saying something, considering much of the cast) and again, her family is a little weird - but Pieces Of Me has a killer hook. And that guitar riff in the chorus is superb.
Personally, if I had to choose between handing a tween loved one a copy of Ashlee’s heavily-polished-in-the-studio debut album or some cringeworthy piece of R&B schlock balladry like Amanda Perez’s Angel, it’d be Ashlee all the way. I just wouldn’t buy ‘em concert tickets.
And if you must know, I am currently practicing what I preach and listening to Pieces Of Me as I write - a guilty pleasure, or so uncool it’s actually cool? You decide!
PS: Don’t decide, I am positive you are going to judge me harshly.
PPS: I realise this post is incoherent and pointless. It’s been a big day.
Posted by Jess at February 14, 2005 05:55 PMBoth Since You’ve Been Gone and La La are great tunes. Kelly gets abit rock chick in that one, as does Ashlee. Kelly appears to have lost a bit off the arse since the Breakaway clip and looks all the more tremendous for it. She’s a truely beautiful young lady. If Ashlee did the same and got a half decent stylist (while still maintaining her slightly edger image) she’d be much hotter than her than her rather bland sister! But That’s just my opinion …

Both of those songs, La La and Since You’ve Been Gone, plus Rich Girl and What You Waitin’For, have given pop music a new lease of life for me. I love those songs to bits. As for Ashlee Simpson being hot, I don’t know about that, but she has that “I’m the bhaad sister” thing happening, which I’m always partial to. You know, like the Minister’s daughter in The Simpsons whom Bart falls head over heels for.

Oooh! I was going to write about Rich Girl as well but forgot about it! That song is divine too - absolute disco anthem for the naughties. Gwen Stefani, I am surprised to say, could be one of the best things to happen to pop in the last few years.

Since You’ve Been Gone is a really rocking track. I thought I was the only music snob to like this, and now I feel better. Not such a big fan of Ashlee, but Gwen Stefani is a god-send. I’m also really liking (gulp) Get Right by Jennifer Lopez.

I am shamed by how much I like certain pre-fab popstars. I’m quite partial to a few Avril Lavigne songs, an admission unlikely in allowing me any music cred.
But then, I’ve the Daphne and Celeste CD, so I never really had cred aspirations to begin with.
(I don’t want to like La-La, but I do. Bad aural nooks and crannies, giving these songs purchase.)

I think the intelligence of the world would be raised if every concert venue had anthrax in the venting, and was set to release it if the crowd screamed at a certain pitch.
