So, I’ve confessed my new found adoration of Stephen Malkmus’ Vanessa From Queens. I can also confidently declare I warmly heart other tunes of his like Troubble and Pink India.
But what else should ausculture.com be listening to, eh? We got a glimpse of the music taste of y’all (ooh, I’m so Britney!) during our Best Line In A Song - Ever post, but I’m hungry for new stuff. Hungry like the wolf!
What’s ace? What’s hugely fashionable to the point of being unfashionable by next month? What makes you want to take your pants off and dance in the rain, primal style? Hell, what’s currently playing as you read this?
If people don’t mind extended music talk, we’re contemplating launching a section of the site called Mixtape Madness (although the name might need to be changed to something, I don’t know, decentl?) where Patrick, myself and any of you rockin’ folk out there can compile a mix tape (or CD or iPod, depending on how advanced ye are) playlist for the perusal of ausculture.com’s small but awesome* readership.
*I hope you guys appreciate my constant loving reassurance.
You are special. You are a winner. I am secretly Anthony Robbins and I claim my five pounds…
Posted by Jess at December 17, 2004 04:17 PMCurrently floating my boat is the new disc from Kings of Leon, Aha Shake Heartbreak. If i had to pick a couple of standout tracks it’d be Pistol of Fire and Day Old Blue.
Also worth checking out is I’ve Been Thinking by Handsome Boy Modeling School with Cat Power. It’s wicked.
And i know they’re kinda trendy at the moment but the Arcade Fire album Funeral is very good.

Oh and there’s also the new album from this little known avant garde Irish quartet.

Which would be U2.

damn comments stripping html

The odd thing is, HTML doesnt work in the comments, but still works a-ok on the front page - where the spammers commenting is most irritating. How purrrrculiar!
I have heard of U2! They’re that little indie band with limited funds and a small fanbase, right?

Don’t you love how U2 get their own iPod???

That’s because the comments on the front page are sucked live from the database without any processing. It’s done that way for speed issues.

Common People by William shatner is a definite must have. It’s so funny because he talks instead of singing but he’s trying to sing.

What ever happened to Corey Haim by the Thrills… Ohhhh I love it! Awesome tune with references to an 80’s teen heart throb withered away into obscurity. What more would you want?

Probably widely known in Melbourne but not nearly as much elsewhere is a band called Augie March.
http://www.augie-march.com
Unparalleled lyrically, their sometime gentle, sometime full-blown-rock ditties are to the ear what Löwenbräu is to the tastebud. Any song off their ‘Sunset Studies’ or ‘Strange Bird’ album would sit quite nicely on ‘Mixedtape Madness, Volume 1’, methinks.

That’s clearly meant to be ‘Lowenbrau’ with the double dots over the o and u, for those that are more interested in my beer recommendation than my music recommendation.
Damn umlaut discriminating blog software.

Haven’t heard the Strange Bird album but love love love Sunset Studies. Hole In Your Roof makes me skip a beat every time. Everytime I hear that album, I can’t help but feel it’s like a soundtrack to a Tom Roberts painting’s background story. Which doesn’t make much sense, but I’m far more eloquent when trying to drunkenly explain it.

Yes… Augie March are cool. I remember when they had their album featured on JJJ (before they decided to feature every album every week), I would be taken away when I heard the intro to “This Train Will Be Taking No Passengers”. And I got it. It’s an awesome album.
My suggestion is to get Sarah Blasko’s debut album, “The Overture & The Underscore”. Vocally, lyrically and musically such a goooooooood album.

Have you checked out The Art of the Mix (http://www.artofthemix.org)?

Jess, have you heard of a Norwegian group called “Susanna and her Magical Orchestra”? She does a version of Dolly Parton’s “Jolene” that just has to be heard to be believed…
I also reckon Little Birdy’s album is pretty good. She is SOOO cute!

My friend is a family friend of Katy Steele. ;-)
I liked the Little Birdy album, it was what I expected from them, and so I wasn’t blown away. Still good though. *.5 stars

Adam’s favourite band (for the next fifteen minutes) is The Dresden Dolls www.dresdendolls.com. The Postal Service is also good.
For beegee inspired falsetto: you can’t go past the Scissor Sisters.
“hugely fashionable to the point of being unfashionable”: for that you can’t beat the almighty “im going to sell my clothing line through music” Gwen Stefani
But… for true musical genius - none other then Slinkee Minx. (that may or may not have been sarcasm).

Why do you refer to yourself in the 3rd person?

Shut-up Adam! This is my comment! Now… where was I? Oh yes… finding my sanity

I second the Dresden Dolls option. Awesome.

I’ve been losing my gourd for a band called Wolfmother - www.wolfmother.com - since I saw them wail at Meredith. Everyone tells me that they’re totally derivative/ripping off Black Sabbath/gaylord and I should hate them for the same reasons I hate Jet - but I don’t as I am a complex and contradictory individual who plays by my own rules, bitch.

Wolfmother rock the shop. Saw them again on Sunday night and they just blew the crowd away. So very awesome they are.

RE:
The mixtape section sounds good. It could be different to other usual mixes (eg breakup songs, best road trip songs) and have themes like “Songs to Xerox your butt at the Xmas party to” or “Songs for rolicking on the beach with your favourite media mogul’s son”.
