Daryl Somers Returns!
In news no doubt bound to plunge the nation into shock, ex-Hey Hey It’s Saturday host Daryl Somers is rumoured to be returning to television!
Daryl, or The Big D as no one actually called him, is famous for hosting one of Australia’s longest running shows - dragging it out at least 10 years past its expiry date.
While his penchance for wooly jumpers and chatting to puppets was admirable, I have personal reasons for feeling just a little fond of Daz. Just over two years ago, my chum Keeva has her 21st birthday. A fwe months beforehand, on one shameful drunken night, she confessed to having a childhood crush on Daryl (“It was the jumpers! He seemed like a nice man!”) so I set out to get some feedback from Daryl.
Unlike my other plan to invite John Howard and the Queen to her birthday party, I actually followed through and contacted Channel 9 in Sydney, who transfered me to Channel 9 Melbourne, who put me through to his personal assistant. I stated the situation, and Daryl’s personal assistant claimed she’d see what she could do. I was sceptical.
Shockingly, within a week I received a signed photo of Daryl (yes, dressed to the nines in another attractive jumper) which said
Sorry it’s taken me 21 years to let you know I’ve always had a “crush on you”

I was impressed. Clearly, the entire joke behind me getting his autograph was the ridiculousness of anyone ever fancying him, and yet he came through with good humour. I always looked at Daryl a little differently after that…. sniffle.
But I digress….
