I can’t believe how uninterested I am in Australian Idol. I don’t want to sound like those elitist folks who pay out on shows like Idol constantly and pretend they’re too good for it, because I’m nothing like that. I lurve watching Good Idol. I crave it.
But ever since Chanel left, I’ve been surprised by how much I’ve missed her! I didn’t mourn like some did after she was booted, as I felt secure in the knowledge that she’d continue on her kick arse path regardless. But shit - I had no idea just how much I looked forward to her performing each week. When the first post-Chanel booting Sunday night performance rolled along, I just felt nothing. No hate, no affection, nothing.
Could it be that Chanel was the only reason to look forward to on Sunday night’s? I mean, the girl wasn’t perfect but hell - I’m beginning to suspect that even non Chanel lovers had been tuning in simply to see which song she’d choose to sing. The fall in ratings since her departure indicates I could perhaps be right. She was interesting. She occasionally surprised us. She wasn’t always brilliant, but she was never, ever dull.
So what can I say about last night’s program? One word - yawn. There’s nothing wrong with Courtney, Casey or Anthony, don’t get me wrong. I can’t muster up any ill feelings towards them. But neither can I muster up any actual affection, really.
The fast songs were good, I suppose, and the slow songs were boring. The timing of the “touchdowns” (when did they start getting taken seriously?!) were so contrived as to be insulting.
“Casey and Courtney, you’re allowed one each in the first half. We’ll make it seem like Anthony isn’t going to get one at all. But oh, when he closes the show with his groin-tugging rendition of Bridge Over Troubled Waters, BAM - we’ll touchdown him! Yes! The teenage girls will lap it up!”
Am I just in a bad mood generally? Was the show quite brilliant and my tired self missed the entire vibe? Let me know. Restore my faith in the show. I’d also love to discover whether I’m the only one suffering from Idol burn out.

Idols gone waaaaaaaaay shithouse.
I even forgot it was on last night until I heard my mum was cheering for Anthony as he sung his pissweak boy-band interpretation of "Bridge over troubled water".
May Simon And Garfunkel appear in an apparition to kick Anthony in his non-existant scrotum.
(Jesus I'm bitter this morning...)

My mum-in-law hates Anthony so much. After he murdered the Beatles she said "something inside me just died." After last night's raping of Garfunkel she simply said "he is the Devil."
I have never seen anyone miss the point of a song so badly. I had the pleasure of hearing the original on AM radio a few days ago, and so Anthony's "rendition" put me into shock. His ability to turn a heart-wrenching masterpiece into the theme tune for "Titanic 2: Riverboat" is mind-boggling.

You aren't being a bitter old bastard at all; in fact you are absolutely correct. I was always a Chanel fan and was sad when she left, but at the same time happy she can go out and make her own, good, music. A lot of fans said they'd stop watching; I almost did, but, being the Idol fanatic I am, ended up tuning in to big Band night. That show, to borrow some words from the mighty Dicko, was boring as batshit. There's no one there I can... get passionate about. They are all so uninteresting!
I probably dislike Anthony more than the other two, but that doesn't translate into proper fandom.
Even people who didn't like Chanel that much cannot deny that, whatever your feelings about her are, she brought interest to the table. Damnit, in her performances and her interviews, she was interesting!
I made the mistake of watching the seventies show as well; beyond the pale.
The 300,000 viewers Idol lost after Chanel left are a true indication of what she gave to the show. I loved her performances, but even those that didn't needed her to be on the show to have something to talk about!
Just... dull without her.

As they start getting down to only a few people it gets boring. Same as Big Brother. I think it's all downhill from the moment when you think, "hang on, one of these few losers is gonna win!"
But now that we know that whether they win or lose they (basically) get an album deal makes the competition null and void.

No Jess, you didn't somehow end up with a distorted view of a brilliant Idol episode. I found myself prefering to watch Elton John instead!
Idol really is boring without Chanel. I think Casey does have personality potential but not enough to counterbalance the great bopping vortex of bland that is Anthony.

I thought this years idol was fabulous-far better than last years. But then Chanel left, and I was left to realise how far off the mark I was. As much as I disliked contestants such as Millsy and Shannon last year, at least they had a bit of personality to them. All these contestants seem to do is sit backstage with a pained expression on their faces bitching over any bad comment they get, and pretend to be in complete awe of their fellow contestants. Inside Idol is absolutely painful-they've got absolutely nothing of interest to fill an hour timeslot. Whats worse is we all know how this is going to pan out...Anthony will win, release an album, and most likely never be heard of again. Woot.

Yes well thank god it's coming to an end. Anthony will win and Marcia will spend the next week trying to peel her knickers off after Anthony sings a stirringly insincere ballad (probably Celine Dion) in her direction. It will give her and the teenyboppers goosebumps but the rest of us hives!

The songs sung for the 70's night didn't cover what the 70's was all about... DISCO! What the hell was all this ballad-crapola?
They have have come from the 70's, but maybe we need someone like Ricki-Lee or someone who is interesting... just like everyone else has said.
BTW, Courtney losing? Clear winner? Probably.
Pfah... they're all winners in the eyes of the record companies. :(

Or did they already have a disco night? I can't remember :(

That "peel her knickers off" bit gave me the worst case of Marcia-related visual image since the time she humped at the camera in tights at her album launch!
Anyone notice the record producer guy an episode or so ago talking about the big ballad the winner will release to "show what they've got"
URGH! ITS SO FUCKING DULL!
My dream for Idol? The winner releases the Oz equivelent of Toxic by Britney Spears.
Or perhaps they hire Cathy Dennis to ensure the Idol release is actually a perfect slice of pop rather than a perfect slice of poo.

I think they did... but still! The point remains, for a highly exciting (well, diverse at any rate) period in music, Sunday night managed to compact the Seventies era into an hour of dull bunghole.

The biggest problem is that Anthony epitomises everything the Idol haters think Idol is. Once he (inevitably) wins, I reckon the franchise is shot. Or at any rate, stops being so appealling to a broad range of folks and becomes the domain of teenage girls. More so than now, at any rate.
It's not that I hate Anthony - he's just so... BLAH!
Best thing he could do right now would be to announce he and Thorpie are a couple. That'd be remotely interesting!

"That “peel her knickers off” bit gave me the worst case of Marcia-related visual image since the time she humped at the camera in tights at her album launch!"
Pay back time. Now you've given me aesthetically challenging nightmarish images to deal with! Marcia's sweaty gusset girating on national telly, uggggg. I'm off food now for a month!

I got distracted and only just watched Idol, that's how much I don't care.
But then, I actually really liked two of the six performances on Sunday, and then Casey was first into the final, and I'm enjoying it again. I have to say, though, that part of my enjoyment is because I get to be right so often. Last year I was never right enough, after all.
I want Casey to win. I don't think she will anymore, I had a vision of Anthony's CD cover and I'm thinking he's a lock now, but I like Casey. She's inarticulate, not dull. She brought a ton of fire to 'You're So Vain' (a song I like, because I have a weakness for the meta). Plus, when she sucks, it has a way of not sticking to her; her performance of 'Eleanor Rigby' was probably the worst of any performance on that stage this year, and yet Ricki-Lee and Anthony's song-destroying antics (and FUCKING CREED, damn you Hot Dan!) is what people remember.
Anthony was pretty good with the Toto, I thought, and besides once again proving his inherent wee-ness by standing next to human beings who are proper size, he actually delivered it well. 'Bridge Over Troubled Water' was exactly the snooze I expected, but then Anthony's always the snooze I expected. Even when the hosts try to liven him up he doesn't bite. Though when James said that Anthony does the fluting thing with his hands even when he's not holding a microphone, I thought of what he would be holding to his mouth instead and had myself a wry chuckle. I've known since 'The Prayer' that Anthony would be final two, and it was no surprise here.
Courtney... who I've liked a bit more the last couple of weeks. I was impressed, if not overwhelmed, by his Queen performance; nice to see his ambition paying off, and he does seem to have regained some of the likability his arrogance was scaring off. His Paul McCartney singing was dull as dishwater, however well-meant, though - and I can only assume the three contestants made a pact to sing something completely dorky and uncool as their second songs, just so as to have an even playing field.
Anyway, I've actually enjoyed this Idol much more than last years - and yeah, Chanel was a huge part of that, but I just liked the field better this year as well. Now, what d'you say, Jess - should we try and score tickets to the final? It would force my hand on the Sydney issue...
