Cheney Hits New Low | Dear John | Embassy Bombing

Thought you guys might find this article rather interesting. It talks about Dick Cheney’s recent insinuation that voting for Kerry might lead to new attacks on the United States.

Let’s play a political word-association game. You say “blue” and I say “red.” You say “swift” and I say “boat.” You say “Cheney” and I say “Welch” and you ask me what in the world do I mean. And I say that when Dick Cheney warned that the election of John Kerry would increase the risk of a terrorist attack, I immediately thought of Joseph Welch, the patrician Boston attorney who confronted Sen. Joseph McCarthy back in 1954 and asked, “Have you no sense of decency, sir, at long last? Have you left no sense of decency?” The answer in McCarthy’s case was no. It is no different with Cheney.

Cheney made his remarks Tuesday in a campaign stop in Des Moines, where he elevated the election to a choice not between two men or two parties, but between life and death. “It’s absolutely essential that eight weeks from today, on November 2, we make the right choice. Because if we make the wrong choice, then the danger is that we’ll get hit again, that we’ll be hit in a way that will be devastating from the standpoint of the United States,” Cheney said. Somewhere, Joe McCarthy smiled.

Definitely a good read. You may need to register to read the article though. Whatever you do, certainly don’t sign up using a fake email address as it’s not as if the website doesn’t bother waiting for confirmation the email address you supplied is real or not. Ahem.

Fabulous ausculture.com reader Fiona has given me that virtual kick up the arse I was asking for earlier, and headed me in the direction of Dear John. Marvellous! Plenty of downloadable t-shirt designs, screensavers and badges plus a whole bunch of rather amusing “Dear John” letters for your perusal like this one and this one.

Finally, there’s been an explosion outside the Australian Embassy in Jakarta. While no Australians have been injured, at least six people have been killed. I spent some formative years in Jakarta as my father worked for the Australian Embassy (in fact, Indonesian was my first language, which would have seemed rather odd coming from a blue eyed, blonde pre-schooler) which is not entirely relevant to this incident, but something I thought I’d mention. In any case, it surely won’t be long until Phillip Ruddock uses this attack as election fodder so expect to hear more about it.

The bombing has been on Skynews non-stop for the last hour and Downer has been saying it is a terrorist attack against Australia, Locals are blaming JI and that he doesn't think it has anything to do with the election. He and Howard are going to head over there and Latham is about to hold a press confrence about it. This will either make or break the government. The voters may blame Howard and go Latham or the old Stick with what you know in times of crisis.

You'd think that electing Kerry would decrease the chance of a terrorist attack, as the whole reason for the rest of the world's resentment with America at the moment is because of Bush.
