Hello kittens!
Before ausculture.com get themselves knee deep in election banter (at least until October 9th), I figure we might as well do something remotely fun and completely non-political.
Now, since I often visit the websites of people who comment on this site, I have come to learn that a lot of you are quite musically inclined. Not just musicians, mind - but genuine lovers of a variety of different styles of music.
Here’s my dilemma. I’m too poor at the moment to go out spending big on CD’s, and yet I crave new music. Lately I’ve been listening to some of my old favourite albums (today, for example, I enjoyed the brilliant When The Pawn… album by Fiona Apple) and while that’s all good and well, I think I need some new music suggested to me. That’s where you come in - hopefully.
Please, I beg of you - inspire me to listen to something fresh. It can be old or new, obscure or popular - I don’t care, as long as you think it has some merit. If you can be bothered, comment below and suggest an performer\album\song I should investigate more thoroughly, and preferably give me a reason to check them out. Hopefully we’ll all walk away from this experiment gaining at least one new favourite artist.
Already thanks to ausculture.com discussions, I’ve opened my ears to Dolly Parton’s “When You Think About Love”, Hedwig’s “Sugar Daddy” and Trey’s “Take Time”. Thanks Will, Michael & Adam!

If you can wait until next month, Brooke Hogan will be releasing her debut album Brooke Hogan: This Voice. She's 16, blonde (but looks like 35 years old) and promises to be Britney x 10. Oh yeah, and she's Hulk Hogan's daughter.

I always hate giving other people music advice, mainly because it indicates what hideous taste in music I can have...
But for you, Jess, I will try. Someone I'm really liking at the moment is a young lass by the name of Jem; she's Welsh I think, and has a voice a bit like Dido (only ten thousand times better). Her album is called "Finally Woken." Her songs are very dry, very cool, and she is easily obtainable from the COMPLETELY LEGAL SOURCE of your choice. That and the latest album from Bic Runga, called "Beautiful Collision." It's a year or two old now, but I still love it...
Proceed at your own risk!

Yat-kha perhaps?

Hulk Hogan's daughter is releasing an album!
Spirit Fingers, not only are you the queen of HK Honky fashion mistakes you also manage to consistently nail scoop after scoop.
First the Asian Moustache Olympics now this nugget of gold!

Is she good in a good way, or good in a "hilariously shithouse" way? Either way, I'm excited!
Speaking of celebrity children reaching for the stars, which other spawn of celebs are angling for a career in entertainment? I recall something about David Cassidy's paedolicious daughter trying to develop a pop career, and whilst not techincally the fruit of Britney's loins, Jamie Lynn Spears is forging a career in children's television, I believe...
Countdown to nasty drug habit and eventual overdose in nondescript motel room while on a prostitution assignment? 10, 9, 8, 7...

Is that Tuvan throat music again? I knew you'd suggest something slightly odd like that :)
Posted by: Jess | September 1, 2004 10:26 AM
Why thank you Scottie - I'll investigate further and get back to you on it! I heard good things about Bic Runga's last album but didn't get a chance to check it out. I will legally purchase the above recommended titles shortly and let you know how I go...

I have not posted here before so I kinda feel like the new kid in the playground. I think I may stir things up a bit here by saying, what in the hell are you people listening to??? I like to think I am fairly open minded when it comes to music, but I would prefer to listen to Nikki Webster's strawberry kisses on repeat than some of what you have listed... With that out of the way I will now reveal what I have been listening to this month so you can bag out my taste (only fair I guess)
Beastie Boys - To the 5 boroughs, The Streets - a grand dont come for free, Butterfingers - Party at fatboys, Prodigy - Fat of the land (waiting for new album), Hilltop hoods, N.E.R.D., Plus DJs like ferry corsten and paul oakenfold
I do listen to pop music as well but I don't buy the albums because most pop artists can't find 10+ good tracks to put on a CD.

How about some Robert Johnson, the blues maestro of mythic fame who allegedly sold his soul at the crossroads ?

You know what we do to new kids around here? (insert "Hanging Tough" joke)
Welcome to the banter. I dare say a few of the suggestions have been tongue in cheek (unless Hulk Hogan's daughter really IS excellent) but regardless, we're a fairly openminded bunch around here. Unless you're Cosima.
Not sold on the Beasties latest effort (from what I've heard, which is admittedly not much) but am curious about NERD, Butterfingers and Hilltop Hoods' albums since I've heard one or two songs from each that I quite like.
The Prodigy's new album - is that the one with the track featuring Juliette Lewis on vocals? I really liked that song when I heard it on the radio last week!

Ahh yes, that's a great tale, isn't it? Certainly captured my imagination when I first heard it!!
Posted by: Jess | September 2, 2004 9:33 AM
Oi! Dave! I hope you're not mocking MY taste in music, or I shan't be impressed. Both N.E.R.D. albums are pretty damn awesome, though...
Oh, and Strawberry Kisses? Top tune, that one. My Nikki Webster hatred almost vanished once I heard that little ditty.
Okay, so I'm conceited enough to think your comment was directed at me anyway. Call it years of defending my musical tastes.

Strawberry Kisses freaked me out, personally. Isn't a "strawberry kiss" slang for going down on a ladyfriend while she's menstruating?
Thus a fifteen year old Nikki singing "I've been missing your strawberry kisses" just struck me as completely and utterly wrong!

I found a clip (actually seems to be the entire song) of her single "Everything to Me" at this site:

Can't think of any other notable celebrity offspring off the top of my head. If you like jazzy stuff, I hear people have actually been buying Steven Seagal's Songs From the Crystal Cave.

I guess its the same as the dolmio grin... But to answer your question about juliette lewis, yes she is on the album. I have managed to hear the album and I can't wait to buy it! Quite different to previous stuff but still prodigy.

Hi Jess,
I've been lurking for a little over a week, loving everything (thanks especially for that link to the beginner's guide to politics - that was priceless).
I would like to second any Bic Runga calls that have been made. Being utterly backward about music more recent than the mid 90s, I did not know of her before we came to New Zealand last year. Now I am a junkie. Beautiful Collision is much better than her first album in my opinion, and there is another awesome CD of her Live in Concert with the Christchurch Symphony. If you can get this brilliant CD in Australia, it is amazing.

Brooke Hogan has a remarkable resemblance to her father, right down to the 26" pythons! Well, not really, but I bet she could put a music critic in a chin lock in under two seconds...
She won me over when she said "Dang!" in this interview over at VH1.com...

Another lurker out of the woodwork!
Welcome, and make yourself at home. The guide to Aussie politics was rip-roaringly good, wasn't it? I think I have bloggers envy!
This weekend I will endeavour to get my paws on Bic, and I'll let you all know what I think... I've liked other stuff she's done so I'm sure I won't hate it!
Doesn't she have a sister too? Starting with B who is a muso as well?
Posted by: Jess | September 3, 2004 12:59 PM
Wow, look who knows her NZ music! Yeah, Bic has a sister, Boh, who is part of a group called stellar*. Their first album ("Mix") was a nice mix of rock and more bloopy electric music, quite ballady and pretty. The second album ("Magic Line") was more straightforward rock, but it's quite good too. I can recommend them both, but go with Bic first.
Those talented New Zealanders, huh? Must be something in the water
Posted by: scottie | September 4, 2004 2:47 PM
Their other sister is also a singer, albeit much less wellknown. Her name is Pearl. It has been said that she it the best singer of the three of them, but she has chosen to be a teacher. It's an incredibly talented family.
Posted by: Fiona | September 4, 2004 4:01 PM
Aww shucks. I think I recall seeing Ms Boh Runga in a video clip and thinking "Good for Bic, she's started a band!" and it turned out it was her sister. From memory I liked the song I heard but I might have to go and investigate Boh Runga further.
Yup - you New Zealanders are quite talented, when you're not lusting after barnyard animals! Sorry, as an Aussie I am forced to make that joke even though it's incredibly old and cliched. The Finns, Evermore, Dave Dobbyn - is there anything the Kiwi's can't do? Other than get their vowels the right way around?
