Musical Challenge Me #2 - Completed

Hold me, I’m scared!

Okay, I offer up to the altar of pisstaking the rockin’ guitar funky blues version* of Ice-T & Bodycount’s Cop Killer. I just want you all to know how ridiculous I felt singing lines like “Fuck the police for my dead homies” but I carried out the challenge and have emerged unscathed, if slightly disturbed. A moment to look out for - me throwing the mic away at the end in frustration.

Download ausculture.com’s remix of Cop Killer

Download the original Bodycount version of Cop Killer

I’m going to regret putting this online, aren’t I? There’s no way on earth a white female Australian can sing a line like “Have some mother fucking courage” and pull it off.

*May not contain any of these things, but it may contain traces of nuts.

You're a champion Jess! Classic. You're right, it's ridiculous - but so good. I laughing!

Bless ya, thanks very much! Now, do I attack Read My Lips and turn it into a country & western tune a la Dolly Parton, or do I wait for the next suggestion? Someone suggested Cannibal Corpse to me at the pub last week but I think even I must acknowledge my limits.

Would that be a Cannibal Corpse in a new genre, or another song played as if by Cannibal Corpse?

Cannibal Corpse song, done in new genre. Though I am fairly certain my repertoire of genres is fairly limited, but I can only try. I think the CC song was something to do with a cunt? Something rude, at the very least! By jingoes, I'm appalled at the thought!

I'm afraid I'm just not too knowledgeable when it comes to Cannibal Corpse and bands of their ilk.

I'd say get Read My Lips back on the frontburner, but I must say I'm blissfully unaware of Cannibal Corpse - so it might be a learning experience for (at least some of) your readers.

Very entertaining Jess. You pulled that off surprisingly well.

I notice that you appear (just slightly) a bit of a Dolly Parton fan...how about covering a Sisters of Mercy song as a homage to the great cover they did of Jolene ? The classic "Goth" anthem Temple of Love is a pretty good genre challenge to my mind. The riffs are really simple and tabulated on OLGA, you can find lyrics at http://www.mote.org/~don/Complete.Lyrics.phtml#TempleofLove if not familair with this one.

Or how about having a crack at something by Nine Inch Nails - industrial metal converted to acoustic guitar would be rather amusing.

Hehehe, well I'm glad you liked it. Yes, I am a true Dolly fan nowadays - were you around for our Dolly Parton Appreciation Week? If so, you'd understand why I adore her so much, the woman is fab-u-lous!

As for your suggestions, well, I thought about NiN, but I know heaps of their stuff already so I feel like I'd be having a little bit of an advantage. Whereas I had never heard that Sisters Of Mercy song before in my life. I downloaded bought the song, have had a listen, and am absolutely stumped about how I'll cover it.

BUT - this is what Musical Challenge Me is all about. I shall not cop out! I will work on a cover this week, and it should be up hopefully Monday. It may well be hideous though, so don't blame me if it's really bad :)

Fantastic ! Looking forward to hearing it.

Unfortunately I have only 'discovered' your site fairly recently, so missed much of the Dolly appreciation week. Love Dolly and shall be sure to peruse your archives at some point...

So if Dolly was to duet (a good song, not that schmaltzy Islands in the Stream) who do you think she should duet with ? I'd go for Don Williams or Willie Nelson if C/W, Nick Cave if seeking a culture clash. I digress...don't think you'll find Temple of Love too hard, I taught it to myself on acoustic guitar at some point and I'm categorically musically untalented, and so long as the riff is prominent any Goth worth their salt could recognize the song from the other side of the country, it truly is a classic of the genre.

falls over from shock

Schmaltzy? Nay, epicurus. Free your mind, and let it show you the brilliance of Islands In The Stream. I think you'll find my play by play summary of its genious somewhere on the site :)

Duet wise - me, naturally. But if that fell through (and I'm available 24/7, Dolly!!) perhaps Loretta Lynn, and they could sing country's first lesbian country ballad?! Or perhaps she could work with Franz Ferdinand? The thing about Dolly is, she could work with anyone, she's that brilliant. Fact. Hence collaborations with Ladysmith Black Mambazo AND Sly Stallone.

Worked out the chords from listening to the song, I'm just scared of the singing part :P Also trying to decide whether to do a proper cover on acoustic (rockin!) or turn it into a ballad. But Jack-Jack-Jackie was very slow, so I'm leaning towards rockin'...

He he he. Found your article on Islands. Sorry, still think it is a lesser Dolly work :)

The lyrics don't make any sense Jess !!

How do you "get someone with a fine tooth comb" ? And the whole mixed metaphor thing..if the islands are in a stream, where are they sailing away too ??

My mind shall remain fettered I'm afraid...;)

And WHY is there no Donofrio on the Law and Order thingo on your front page ?? Sacrilege !!!
