The Logies Nominees

Welcome to the ausculture.com run down of the 2004 TV Week Logie Award Nominees. I have decided to second guess most of the ‘popular’ awards as opposed to the ‘outstanding’ awards, as the latter relies on talent, and the former relies on… well, not much at all really. So I’m completely qualified to judge. Will I be right? After the Logies, I’ll put the winner in italics. Until then, do what you will with the rantings of an insomniac gal.

TV WEEK Gold Logie Most Popular Personality on TV

Lisa Chappell Her character died on McLeod’s Daughters so tragically that even I started crying when I stumbled across the last three minutes of the show while channel surfing. I am so pathetic. Gold Logie deserving however? I suspect the TV Week readers will lean towards a no. Delta Goodrem Delta will win this award for several reasons. One starts with C, unfortunately. Despite this, she also seems to have a pretty nice ‘personality’ and I think she was on TV at least once last year, which appears to be the only criteria to win this award. Rove McManus Rove, Rove, Rove. Sometimes you make me laugh, sometimes you make me cry in pain. Sometimes you wear a leotard, pole dance and make me do both simultaneously. Still, you get 100,000 bonus points in my book for showing Ben from Big Brother 3 to be the cocksmoker he is last year. But somehow, I suspect it’s a ladies turn this year. Georgie Parker Ah, faithful Georgie. As ex-nun and nurse Terri on All Saints, you’ve won a nation’s heart, and you’ve certainly paid your dues over the years, starring in countless Aussie soaps. I suspect you could be the dark horse, but really - it’s Delta’s year. John Wood Poor old John. It just ain’t gonna happen, buddy. Still, keep nabbing those crims in the crack house that is Mt Thomas, and one year things might go your way. Maybe.

TV WEEK Silver Logie Most Popular Actor

Beau Brady - Home And Away Actor? Hahahaha. Oh wait, it’s most popular, not best, so you may be in with a chance… in 40 years when your fans become old enough to start buying TV Week! Good luck in the Dolly Magazine Prince Of Soap awards though. Does that just exist? Am I showing my age?
Aaron Jeffery - McLeod’s Daughters I don’t know much about this fellow cept I recognise his face and I think he was in a show about fire or rescue or both at some point in the last decade.
Myles Pollard - McLeod’s Daughters I’m sorry, who?
Glenn Robbins - Kath & Kim I hope he wins. Funny as hell show, and Glenn’s Kel Dark is hilarious. If there’s a God (and the fact that little shit Eamon has actually made it into the charts is leading me to question this belief) Glenn Robbins will win it.
Erik Thomson - All Saints A good chance, since his popular character Mitch from All Saints died last year, and the TV Week readers love a good death. Loses points, naturally, because he went on to theatre to perform The Complete Works Of William Shakespeare (Abridged) as opposed to supermarket commercials.

TV WEEK Silver Logie Most Popular Actress

Bridie Carter - McLeod’s Daughters The only one of McLeod’s daughter’s that remains alive, I believe. While I’m sure TV Week readers love the show, a certain someone in this category ensures you won’t win.
Bec Cartwright - Home And Away While I’m of the belief that Bec’s chin cleft is deserving of a Logie all of it’s own (have you seen it’s emotional range? Awe inspiring), I don’t imagine she’ll be going home with the award tonight. If Bec wins tonight, expect to see her holding an ARIA award next. All Seats Taken, indeed.
Lisa Chappell - McLeod’s Daughters The dead one again. About to lose to Delta again.
Delta Goodrem - Neighbours Yup, yet another one for Delta, I can feel it in my bones. And they’re never wrong, you know.
Tammin Sursok - Home And Away Tammin has a silly name, and she’s only three feet tall (it’s true, I saw her outside Cargo Bar once) but her stint in jail might win her fans with the TV Week voters, who are old enough to remember Prisoner when it was originally on. Even though each reference to a ‘top dog’ warmed the cockles of the mag hags hearts, it just ain’t enough to overpower Mrs Poo.

TV WEEK Silver Logie Most Popular TV Presenter

Facts: One of the nominees loves watching wrestling, another played didgeridoo through a PVC pipe on a Paul Kelly song, another used to brag about his bisexual dalliances, and another is a total knob. And one is Andrew G.

Ernie Dingo - The Great Outdoors
Jamie Durie - Backyard Blitz, The Block
Andrew G - Channel [v], Australian Idol He’s a hottie, and he used to be fat! I love a good underdog story. He also hosted (marvellously, by the way) Australia’s 2003 hit, Australian Idol, which may well help him. The award will probably go to Rove, but I hope Andrew wins it.
David Koch - Sunrise
Rove McManus - Rove [Live]

Most Popular New Male Talent

Dr Chris Brown - Harry’s Practice Who?
Daniel Frederiksen - Stingers Who?
Kip Gramblin - Home And Away Kip seems like a decent bloke and has a nice body. I’m a shallow person. Did you know he’s a ballet dancer and cavorted solo as the opening act of a Barbra Streisand concert?
Andrew O’Keefe - Deal Or No Deal Seriously now, what the fuck?! Who came up with this batch of nominations? Someone out there has a lot to answer for…
Luke van Dyck - DIY Rescue, Renovation Rescue Also a hottie, and Australia does love DIY shows. However this award generally goes to someone of the soapland community and I expect it’ll do the same this year.

Most Popular New Female Talent

Isabel Lucas -Home And Away God, I hope not. While playing blonde bombshell who wears a school uniform by day and likes getting her gear off at night might win her male fans, I find myself constantly trying to work out if her character is meant to be mildly retarded, or if it’s just Isabel’s acting ability.
Simmone Jade Mackinnon - McLeod’s Daughters Who? I think she might be the new red-haired one who arrived to replace the dead chick. Unlikely.
Stephanie McIntosh - Neighbours Even though young Stephanie bugged me at first, I’ve grown oddly fond of her. Her portrayal of an unpopular girl stuck in an up-turned Port-A-Loo alone earns her this award. Did you know she’s Jason Donovan’s sister? In real life, I mean, not in some kinky Bishop\Robinson way.
Katrina Milosevic - Stingers I sound like a broken record but who?
Amy Mizzi - Home And Away Wh… okay, dammit, I’ll look her up. Uno momento. *time elapses while Google searches* OH! The one who looks like an Eastenders extra, not a Summer Bay star! But she has a drinking problem and could yet morph into Irene II so she’s gone up a few notches in my book. I’m still gunning for Jason’s little sis.

Most Popular Light Entertainment/Comedy Program

Australia’s Funniest Home Video Show (Nine Network) Please God, no. This show is 10 years past it’s used by date. I know, I went to a particularly unfunny taping of the show which cemented for me both that the hosts are extremely stupid and that they use a laugh track over the audiences uncomfortable giggling when they air each episode.
Kath & Kim ABC I hope they win it, they deserve it! Best Aussie comedy in years, and a worthy addition to anyone’s DVD collection. The adventures of Kath, Kim, Kel and Sharon has been a diamond in the rough that is Australian television.
Merrick & Rosso Unplanned (Nine Network) Sorry, guys, but your Baddiel & Skinner rip off just doesn’t work for me. I still love you on radio though, if that helps. And I’m sure it doesn’t.
Rove [Live] (Network Ten) This one just may upset Kath & Kim, but I hope not.
Who Wants To Be A Millionaire (Nine Network) Eddie McGuire (or Uncle Eddie as I like to call him) may have a finger in every lucrative entertainment pie in the country, but he won’t win this award, no sir.

Most Popular Reality Program

Australian Idol (Network Ten) So many choices! But Australian Idol should… nay, HAS to win the award. The fact that we gained Guy Sebastian out of it totally makes me forgive it for leading to Shannon Noll singing Bryan Adams’ songs. Seriously though, the affection most people had for the Final 12 (Cosima being the exception, other than for dimwitted folks with no taste) and Idol’s ratings bonanza lead me to believe it’s going to be their award. However, this category is a close one.
Big Brother (Network Ten) Having finished mid-2003, Big Brother might have faded from most people’s memories. Time will tell whether the nation’s affection for Reggie Bird will remain enough to push TV Week readers into ticking their box. Or something.
The Block (Nine Network) The other reality TV hit of last year, The Block could easily come out in front of Australian Idol. Lord knows that Channel Nine is the official TV station of the awards, and probably also the readers. Older voters also have a thang for DIY. Finally, it was one of the highest rating finales of last year. Truly a contender.
The Mole In Paradise (Seven Network) I think not.
RPA (Nine Network) As much as I love watching people’s operations on the telly - no, Scott.

TV WEEK Silver Logie Most Popular Australian program

All Saints (Seven Network) It’s either this, or Blue Heelers in my books. Definitely Logie-voter’s material for the big award.
Australian Idol (Network Ten) Great show, but unlikely to beat veteran shows. Still, maybe?
Blue Heelers (Seven Network) The other contender. However, it is lacking the Lisa McCune-ness of the old days, which can only work against it.
Home And Away (Seven Network) Not likely.
McLeod’s Daughters (Nine Network) While the show is totally bred to appeal to TV Week readers, I suspect it’s not enough to win. Perhaps they can tempt Lisa McCune to guest star?
Neighbours (Network Ten) Ahh, my old favourite. I don’t think it will win but who knows what next years awards will hold, especially if it continues with story lines like naughty Harold, broke Lou, the Erinsborough mafia and tomato sauce-drinking teens with attention deficit disorders? Oh, one more thing. GET KARL AND SUSAN BACK TOGETHER. I haven’t been this sad since Doug and Pam Willis separated! Is the house cursed or something?
Rove [Live] (Network Ten) In with a slim chance, but I’d say noooo.

See all the nominees here!

Get a life You must be such a bored, unhappy, insecure person. There is so much more to life then putting down others and one day you'll wake up alone and a bitch. I feel so sorry for you i really do.

Yes because the internet is serious business and EVERYTHING that is written on the internet is to taken seriously, no humour is allowed.

This is incredible. Are you sure your name is Michael and not Athena Starwoman? You have an uncanny knack of completely sussing out my personality!

And I can only dream of waking up alone. Each morning I am forced to kick any number of ratbags, local hookers and the odd clergymen from my overused king sized bed. I feel so used, which is obviously dreadful. I will try harder at being a nicer person. Thank you for your inspiring words.

xxxx

PS: Did you REALLY give us your REAL email address? Relating to your school? Surely you anticipated the traditional "Apple In The Chapel" jokes?!

Good lord. I re-read this post (since it's circa 1893 or something) and I think I'm astonishingly NICE in it! Compared to most days, anyways.
